Google & Facebook Are ’Surveillance States’ and Risk more Regulation, Former Facebook Executive Says

Now acting as Social Capital CEO, Chamath Palihapitiya, once an Executive at Facebook, says Facebook and Google are like "surveillance states" and are inviting a government crackdown. Palihapitiya is now bullish on Amazon and thinks it will have a longer runway before the government tries to intervene. "Amazon is a microscopic portion of global consumption today, so ultimately I think it has more room to grow before it invites regulatory overview," Palihapitiya says. "On the other hand, Facebook and Google effectively are surveillance states. And they have so much personal, private information about so many citizens of so many countries." Google has already had a tussle with regulators in Europe, after the company was slapped with a record fine in one investigation. "It’s already beginning," Palihapitiya points out. "Because it is part and parcel to them realizing that there is too much power unbounded." He notes that many big technology companies have seen their stocks soar, making it tempting to take gains. Palihapitiya has added "I think investors should reframe the way they think about the long-term trajectories of the companies. For instance, Amazon is competing against Wal-Mart, which has acquired e-commerce companies like Jet.com and Bonobos. But with tools like Alexa, robots and cloud, Amazon’s technology could lead it to victory over "laggard competitors," Palihapitiya argues.
Google Threatens to Shut down "Free Speech" Social Site Gab
Search engine giant Google and other tech giants platforms have threatened to shut down free-speech social media site Gab in the name of fighting hate speech. Gab, a social media platform known as a free speech oasis, was just recently ordered to

transfer their Australian domain elsewhere or face shutdown. Gabs domain registrar has given us 5 days to transfer our domain or they will seize it. The free and open web is in danger, the website tweeted. Asia Registry is poised to shut down the pro-1st Amendment website because it claims Gab violates Australian federal and state anti-discrimination laws, which prohibit public vilification on the basis of race, religion, or ethnic origin, and accuses the website of being discriminatory and hateful.
Google has already booted Gab off the Google Play store, also citing violations of their hate speech policies, which has prompted Gab to sue the tech giant for violating anti-trust laws. Google is the biggest threat to the free flow of information, Gab chief executive Andrew Torba said in a statement. Gab started to fight against the big tech companies in the marketplace, and their monopolistic conduct has forced us to bring the fight to the courtroom. Gab alleges in the lawsuit that Google deprives competitors, on a discriminatory basis, of access to the App Store, which an essential facility or resource. As recently reported, Google has been caught censoring information on numerous occasions, and has even admitted to censoring Infowars despite providing no evidence of hate speech.
Facebook Is Temporarily Removing Its Ad Targeting Feature that Let Marketers Reach Inappropriate Categories

Facebook is temporarily removing some of its ad targeting options in the wake of reports that the site was being used to target people based on categories thought improper. Reports surfaced that Facebooks ad targeting algorithm was surfacing these inappropriate categories to advertisers. The problem is that Facebook allows advertisers to target people based on self-reported categories like field of study, school, job title or company. When users put Jew hater as their field of study, for example, that label was then appearing to advertisers as a legitimate way to target people with ads. Facebook says it is planning to fix that targeting process, but in the meantime, it will shut it down and eliminate the ability to target users based on theses categories until it figures out how. To help ensure that targeting is not used for discriminatory purposes, we are removing these self-reported targeting fields until we have the right processes in place to help prevent this issue, Facebook wrote in a blog post. We want Facebook to be a safe place for people and businesses, and well continue to do everything we can to keep hate off Facebook. This is not the first time one of Facebooks software algorithms has been abused in the past year. Its News Feed algorithm, which determines what people see and dont see in their feed, was gamed to help spread misinformation ahead of last falls U.S. election. More recently, it was discovered that inauthentic accounts from Russia bought $100,000 worth of political ads during the same election cycle.
